Advancing Technology for Vision Correction

Our History
More than two decades ago, as the founder and CEO of Summit Technology, Dr. David Muller pioneered the use of excimer lasers for performing today’s laser vision correction surgery. Under his direction, Summit Technology became the worldwide leader in providing excimer lasers for refractive correction and the first company to receive FDA approval to market excimer lasers for laser vision correction in the United States.

Dr. Muller understood the limits of today’s laser vision correction technology and recognized the fear people have of laser eye surgery. So, in 2003 he saw interesting potential in a small start-up which was attempting to develop a product based on a research project in microwave technology being conducted at Dartmouth College by professor B. Stuart Trembly.

Dr. Muller applied his unique science and business background to investigate the feasibility of turning the basic research conducted at Dartmouth into a new technology for refractive vision correction. Working with Prof. John Marshall in London, a series of proof-of principle experiments were conducted. After becoming convinced of the technology’s feasibility, Dr. Muller founded Avedro, Inc., and in January 2008 completed a Series A round of funding to secure the capital needed to develop the technology and assemble the team to make it a reality.

Within 12 months of securing its initial funding, the Avedro team had designed, developed and manufactured its first Vedera™ KXS for providing the Keraflex® procedure. Clinical trials commenced in Europe in March 2009 for the correction of myopia, and subsequently expanded to include the treatment of keratoconus.

The rapid advancement of the Vedera KXS and clinical work with the Keraflex procedure led to a Series B round of funding for Avedro in April 2009.

The Keraflex Procedure
Keraflex is Avedro’s patented and proprietary, non-invasive refractive correction procedure that gently reshapes the cornea. Because it is non-incisional and non-invasive, Avedro believes Keraflex will be the first refractive correction procedure to preserve the cornea’s bio-mechanical integrity. Keraflex is expected to overcome current barriers to the broader adoption of laser vision correction, especially fear of undergoing eye surgery among low and moderate myopes. Refractive correction and the preservation of the biomechanical integrity of the cornea are also proving to be of importance in the treatment of keratoconus.

The Vedera KXS, for performing the Keraflex procedure, is a CE marked product. The Vedera KXS is not currently available in the United States.
